The Hallicrafters Company was founded by Bill Halligan in 1932. The first receivers were hand made (thus the name Hallifor Halligan and craftersfor hand crafted). To increase production and obtain the proper manufacturing licenses, Halligan purchased the Silver-Marshall Company. This business struggled to an end in 1934. Halligan then combined with the then anemic Echophone Company. By the end of the 1930's the company was moving along well, bringing out new models to meet each new circuit advancement as well as making transmitters. Hall icrafters produced all types of equipment for the war effort. After World War 11 the company began producing consumer electronics items including clock radios, TVs and phonographs. The 1950's were very good for Hallicrafters, but the company was sold twice, ultimately to Northrop in 1966. Hallicrafters did not prosper under the wing of Northrop. By the mid 1970's sales were down sharply and Northrop sold the company in 1975. Efforts to successfully continue and revive the company have failed. Chuck Dach is' book Radios By Hallicrafters is a must-read for any Hallicrafters enthusiast or collector.
